The JHS Climate Change Quiz Competition: Educating and Empowering Ghana’s Youth on Climate Action

Agenda Events In-Action Slideshow

Climate change remains one of the most pressing challenges of our time, and its effects are increasingly felt in communities across Ghana. Recognizing the urgent need to educate and involve the next generation in climate action, Climate Communications and Local Governance-Africa (CCLG-Africa), in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovations, launched the JHS Climate Change Quiz Competition. This annual event is designed to raise awareness, foster knowledge, and inspire action on climate change among Junior High School (JHS) students nationwide.

A Vision for Climate Education

The JHS Climate Change Quiz Competition is rooted in CCLG-Africa’s mission to advocate for environmental sustainability through education, capacity building, and information dissemination. By engaging young minds, this initiative seeks to localize climate change discussions and empower students to become ambassadors for environmental protection within their communities.

A History of Collaboration

The feasibility and pilot phase of this initiative began in January 2019 in partnership with members of Ghana’s Parliament. Following extensive groundwork and stakeholder engagement, the competition officially commenced in 2022. Since then, it has grown to become a platform that unites students, educators, policymakers, and environmental advocates in the fight against climate change.

Structure of the Competition

The competition adopts a multi-stage format that ensures widespread participation and promotes excellence at every level:

  1. Inter-Schools Level: Schools within selected districts, both public and private, register at district secretariats and compete within circuits. Winners advance to the next stage.
  2. Inter-Circuits Level: Circuit champions compete to represent their districts.
  3. Inter-District Level: District winners form teams and compete for the chance to represent their regions. Individual excellence is also recognized, with standout performers selected for district teams.
  4. Inter-Regional Level: District teams compete at the regional level, and the best teams advance to the national finals.
  5. National Level: The top three regional teams face off in a televised national finale to determine the ultimate champions.

Awards and Incentives

Participants at every stage of the competition are celebrated for their efforts and achievements. Prizes include:

  • Educational materials: Storybooks, study materials, and textbooks.
  • Certificates and trophies: Recognizing individual and team excellence.
  • Laptops and international exchange opportunities: Awarded to the national champions.

Empowering the Future

The JHS Climate Change Quiz Competition is more than just a contest; it is a movement to instill environmental consciousness and responsibility in Ghana’s youth. By engaging students in critical discussions about climate change and its effects, the competition equips them with the knowledge and skills needed to drive meaningful action in their communities.
