The Parliament of Ghana, has served a notice of its intention to invite the Management of the Volta River Authority (VRA) to brief the house on the recent spillage of the Akosombo Dam that caused flood at the lower belt of the volta river.
The Majority and Minority leaders made the call during their welcome statement to parliament as the house resumes from recess today October 31, 2023, the Hon Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, who is also the Minister for the Parliamentary Affairs made the statement on the floor of parliament and later address the members of the Parliamentary press Corps in Parliament.
According to him, the leadership of Parliament would have a dialogue with the Speaker of Parliament as to how best the House could support the victims.
While empathizing with the Victims, Mr. Kyei Mensah Bonus, believed a brief from the VRA would help the nation on how best steps should be taken to avoid future spillage that could lead to displacement of thousands of persons. He added that, the Minister for Energy and the Minister for Water Resources might also be invited to brief the house
The Minority Leader on his part said ‘ I am disappointed the conduct of both government and the Volta River Authority in terms of leading a coordinated emergency response and disaster recovery effort needs more to be desire’
At least, over 12,000 persons are reported to have been directly affected by the floods from the Akosombo Dam Spillage by the VRA in the Volta Region.So far, the government and its agencies, private corporate organizations, and individuals have sent relief items to the victims.
The most affected areas are communities within North Tongu, Central Tongu, South Tongu, Anlo, Ada, Sege, South Dayi, and North Dayi Constituencies.
However, due to the volume of water that the Dam received, some communities in the upper stream of the Akosombo Lake are equally affected.
Some of these areas include Krachi East, Krachi West, Sene East and Sene West, Afram Plains North, Afram Plains South, Pru East and West, Kpandai, Karachi Nchumuru, and other adjourning communities.
