CCLG-Africa @ 5: A Call to Protect Our Environment
Five years ago on August 2, 2021, at Parliament House of Ghana, Osu-Accra, Climate Communications and Local Governance-Africa (CCLG-Africa) was launched with the avowed aim to communicate and localize climate action.
We stand for and have carried one message: that climate action begins at the local level.
As we mark our 5th anniversary, we remind every Ghanaian and every African of our collective responsibility to protect the environment. Climate change is here; it is in our flooded streets, our dry farmlands, and our polluted rivers. Its manifestations are now very palpable and ominous.
CCLG-Africa is therefore using this 5-year anniversary to make strident calls: We, as citizens, must stop indiscriminate littering, plastic pollution, bush burning blockage of waterways, and all forms of nature destabilization; District Assemblies must enforce sanitation by-laws and promote climate sustainable agenda; Parliament and Government must ensure adaptation funds reach local communities and be used for worthy climate action enterprises; and Media and Teachers must collaborate and continue educating the public on sustainable climate behaviors.
In five years, we have convened MPs, MMDAs, women, students, journalists and partners across Africa, presented the Climate Clock to the Rt. Hon Speaker and leadership of Ghana’s Parliament as its commitment to the climate agenda, and represented local voices at COP26, COP27, COP28 and COP29 and other international fora. But the real work is at home – in our workplaces, schools, and communities.
The environment does not need speeches It needs action; Communication is Action; Let us live it!
END.
